Aloha 'Oe (22" x 28")
After Queen Lili‘uokalani loses the royal throne of Hawaii, Pele (the Hawaiian Fire Goddess) stands on the shore of a lagoon before a dead volcano. She has watched Hawaii lose its sovereignty and mourns the annexation of the islands to the United States. As the US takes over, Pele watches her people lose their language, their culture, and their heritage. She stands under a dying moon, glowing with a flicker of hope that someone, anyone, will be brave enough to keep the fire of the native faith alive.
